Jerry A. Shields, MD, leader in ocular oncology, dies

Jerry A. Shields, MD, a world-renowned leader in ocular oncology, died June 22, 2025. In a career filled with accolades, Shields received the Top National Physician of the Year Award for Clinical Excellence in 2013 from Castle Connolly, and in 2014, the American Academy of Ophthalmology honored him with its Laureate Award. Julia A. Haller, MD, ophthalmologist-in-chief at Wills Eye Hospital, called Shields the “best-known and best-loved ophthalmologist on the planet.Wills Eye alumnus Eric Donnenfeld, MD, noted that "Jerry Shield’s contributions to ophthalmology, in my opinion, place him on the Mount Rushmore of our profession."
